Always indoors

Whatever the weather

Feed is included, and Carolyn brings out as many of the girls as your group needs. Over three hours that is most of the herd.

Everyone feeds an alpaca. Every time.

First, the boys

If the weather is good, you may start outside with the boys. They live in their own field, away from the girls, and Carolyn will tell you why.

Whether you feed them out there is her call on the day. A bigger group usually does. A small one usually does not, because the boys come over all at once and there is no holding some of them back in an open field.

If it is cold or wet, we skip this part. You will just get more time with the girls.

What happens in the barn

A minimum of three hours, and none of it spent behind a fence.

Into the Girls' Barn

Then you are inside for the rest of it. Clean footing throughout, no mud, nothing to walk through that you would not want on your shoes. Strollers and wheelchairs come straight in.

Carolyn runs through a few pointers on how to be around the alpacas. It takes a minute.

They come to you

You stand in the centre aisle and Carolyn lets a group of the girls out to join you. Not behind a gate. In the aisle, with you.

Paisley is the one who enjoys the attention most, and on a three hour tour she gets plenty of it.

Kopy Kat is shy and usually keeps her distance. Given long enough she comes over and takes a treat from your hand. On a shorter tour you would probably never meet her.

Then the next group, and the next

Carolyn swaps one group out and brings the next through. On this tour that happens many times over, so you meet most of the herd rather than a handful of them.

You feed each group that comes out. Different ages, different characters, a different feel each time.

Ask Carolyn about Citana. Her mother is Milky Way, her name means star in the sky, and as a cria she somehow talked a second mother into feeding her alongside her own baby, which the mothers here do not normally allow. She was one of the biggest crias that year.

All the way through, Carolyn is talking about them. Ask her anything you like and take as many photos as you want.

Three hours is the minimum. That is twice the V.I.P. tour, and long enough that nothing has to be hurried.

The farm house at the end

When the tour finishes Carolyn walks everyone over to the farm house, where the shop is. She will show you what is there and where it came from, including the things she makes herself from our own alpacas' fibre. Then she leaves you to browse, with 15% off anything you choose.

Many items made from the same herd you just spent three hours with.

Who it's for

People who won't want to leave.

Three hours is a long time with alpacas. Most people find ninety minutes is plenty, and there is nothing wrong with that. By the end of a normal tour most groups have their photographs and are ready for the shop.

This one is for the other sort. The person still crouched in the aisle when everyone else has drifted towards the door. If that is you, or if it is someone you are bringing, three hours is the only tour that will not feel short.

Everything else is the same. The same barn, the same alpacas, the same Carolyn, and nobody else booked into your time.

Not sure you need three hours?

Most people don't, and that is a perfectly good answer.

The V.I.P. tour is ninety minutes of the same thing. Your group only, the same barn, the same alpacas, a plushie for the Guest of Honour and 10% off in the shop. $75 per adult, $35 per youth.

“Carolyn was wonderful with her time and knowledge, she certainly made it worthwhile.”

Prakarsh Upmanyu

“The day we visited was rainy and cold, but Carolyn was so friendly and kind that our big group (10 adults, 3 children under 3!) immediately felt comfortable. The alpacas were so wonderful to interact with and we learned so much!”

E Chow

“We booked a private tour for 2 of us and had a very up close and personal visit.”

Closed-toe shoes. The barn is clean but it is still a barn

Weather

Tours run in rain, snow and wind, because you are indoors. If driving conditions are unsafe, you choose between a reschedule and a refund

Dogs

For the comfort of our alpacas, please do not bring dogs to the farm. Alpacas see a dog as a predator, and even a calm one changes how the herd behaves for the rest of the visit

Ages

Guests have ranged from two weeks old to 98 years old

Access

Wheelchairs and strollers come straight into the barn. Clean footing throughout

Booking ahead

Please book ahead. Tours run to a schedule, and when the day is full we cannot fit anyone else in

Questions

How is this different from the V.I.P. tour?

Twice as long, three hours instead of ninety minutes. Everyone in the group gets a plushie to take home rather than just the Guest of Honour, and the shop discount is 15% instead of 10%. Same barn, same alpacas, same Carolyn, and nobody else booked into your time either way.

Is three hours too long?

For a lot of people, yes, and the V.I.P. tour is there for them. This one is for people who would happily spend an afternoon with alpacas and would rather not watch the clock.

Why can't I book it at 4pm?

It takes two of our time slots, so a 4pm start would run too late. It is available at 10am, 12 and 2.

Who gets a plushie?

Everyone in your group. It is the same one the Guest of Honour takes home on a V.I.P. tour, and on this tour there is one each.

Is it suitable for young children?

Yes, and guests have ranged from two weeks old to 98 years old. Three hours is a long stretch for a small child though, so if you think yours will be ready to go after an hour, the V.I.P. tour is the better booking.

Can we really feed them ourselves?

Yes, everyone does, every time. Carolyn brings out as many alpacas as your group needs so nobody is left waiting for a turn.

What if it rains or snows?

The tour runs. Everything you came for happens indoors. The one exception is driving conditions: if the roads are unsafe, you choose between moving your booking and a full refund.

Can we bring our dog?

For the comfort of our alpacas and to have your best experience, please do not bring dogs to the farm. Alpacas see a dog as a predator, and even a calm one changes how the herd behaves for the rest of the visit.

What should we wear?

Closed-toe shoes, and dress for the temperature outside. The barn keeps the wind, rain and snow off you, but it is not heated, so it will be about as warm as the day is.

Do we have to book ahead?

Please book ahead. Tours run to a schedule, and when the day is full we cannot fit anyone else in. Even when there is room, turning up unannounced usually means waiting half an hour or more while we finish whatever we are in the middle of. Booking ahead means we are ready for you when you arrive.
